Formed in 2003, UnitShifter began its life as a cult movie website devoted to unearthing the strangest underground treasures and sharing them with lovers of all things odd, weird, and completely not okay. During the DVD boom, we partnered with indie-film label Halo-8 to curate, distribute (and sometimes even produce) fresh new voices of the underground. Then the streamers plopped down onto the movie biz and squoze the lifeblood out of distributing non-massmarket movies. I mean, can you even stream Salon Kitty or Ilsa anywhere?? BUT! We feel the tide is turning, and tired eyeballs are craving the gutsy, raucous stories of the pre-streaming eras. It’s always like this — the grindhouse movie era got buried by the multiplexes, the home video explosion got imploded by Blockbuster Video, and the DVD boom got consumed by Netflix. What’s next? We don’t know! But something! Please, for the love of Franco, something has gotta rescue us from this toothless modern era! So we’re back at work reviving the catalog, hunting down the fresh new underground, and doing our best to cram it all down your thirsty peepers!
